Ferneau House Moving is a Six Generation Family business and was established in the Marshalltown area in  the early 1880's.  It all started with John C. Ferneau, who worked along with the help of his son, John O. Ferneau, as a boy and young man.   Once John O. learned all the details and tricks of the trade, he went into business for himself, along with his brother, James Ferneau, in 1886.  The partnership, under the firm name of Ferneau Brothers lasted for seven years.  John then continued the business on his own and successfully handled many large and many more smaller contracts.    The picture to the right is the Marshalltown Detention Hospital which was uprooted and moved by John across the Iowa river.  It skidded safely across without even so much as wetting its sills.  In 1945, the business eventually moved into the hands of John O. Ferneau's son,  LaVerne Ferneau, of the Conrad areaIn 1950, LaVerne's son, Robert L. Ferneau,   took on the family business  and has successfully kept it 'moving' for 60 years, with help from his sons.   At present, the business is being operated by Kevin R. Ferneau of Marshalltown and assisting him are his two sons, Matthew and Logan.
